North Carolina Healthy Weight Initiative (NC HWI) was created with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Obesity Prevention grant to address overweight in North Carolina children and youth.

Fall 2002
|
The NC HWI launched the state plan Moving our Children Toward a Healthy Weight: Finding the Will and the Way. The NAP SACC project was created as the pilot project associated with the grant.

May - December 2003
|
The NAP SACC pilot intervention took place in eight counties throughout North Carolina. The pilot was evaluated through interviews with the Child Care Health Consultants, child care center Directors and staff. Visits to some of the child care centers helped the research team document the nutrition and physical activity changes made at the centers. In addition, the self assessment instrument was reviewed by national experts in the fields of child nutrition, child physical activity, child care, and child development.

August 2005 - August 2006
|
A large scale evaluation of the NAP SACC intervention was conducted in 96 child care centers from 33 counties in North Carolina. A comprehensive environmental assessment (EPAO) was used as the main outcome measure for the study. Additionally, dietary intake and physical activity measures were taken on a sample of children.

Web training was developed to allow health professionals from other areas to be trained to deliver the NAP SACC program.

August 2006
|
Reliability and validity testing of the NAP SACC self assessment instrument was completed in a sample of North Carolina child care centers.

June 2006 - June 2007
|
An intensive version of the NAP SACC intervention will take place in a small sample of child care centers.
|

October 2006 - June 2007
|
The NAP SACC Family Project will take place in a sample of 18 child care centers. This project links the child care centers to the home.
